MUMBAI, India, July 30 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202631083015 A) filed by National Institute Of Technology Durgapur on July 06, 2026, for Airfoil Structure For Enhanced Aerodynamic Performance Through Passive Flow Control.
Inventors include Mahato, Arunabha; and Rana, Subhas Chandra.
The application for the patent was published on July 24, 2026, under issue no. 30/2026.
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to an airfoil structure (100) configured for enhanced aerodynamic performance through passive flow control is disclosed. The structure comprises a main airfoil body (102) extending along a chord length between a leading edge (104) and a trailing edge (106), and defining an upper surface (108) and a lower surface (110). The leading edge (104) includes a plurality of tubercles (112) arranged spanwise, each forming alternating peaks (114) and troughs (116) to generate streamwise vortices for boundary layer energization. A plurality of vortex generators (118) are positioned on the upper surface (108) at approximately 0.5C from the leading edge (104), arranged in counter-rotating pairs and oriented relative to freestream airflow. The combined configuration improves airflow attachment, reduces separation at higher angles of attack, delays stall, and enhances lift-to-drag ratio, thereby providing improved aerodynamic efficiency and stability compared to conventional airfoils.
