Abstract: The present invention relates to a topical ethosomal gel composition comprising Allium cepa L. peel extract and caffeine for topical delivery of antioxidant and photoprotective constituents. The composition comprises Allium cepa L. peel extract and caffeine incorporated within ethosomal vesicles comprising a phospholipid, preferably soya lecithin, cholesterol and ethanol, the vesicles being dispersed in a gel matrix comprising a gelling polymer and propylene glycol. The Allium cepa L. peel extract provides flavonoid constituents including quercetin-equivalent compounds. In an embodiment, the ethosomal dispersion is incorporated into a Carbopol 934 gel. The resulting formulation provides a homogeneous topical dosage form having skin-compatible pH, suitable viscosity, spreadability and sustained release characteristics. The ethosomal carrier facilitates incorporation and topical delivery of the active constituents, while the gel provides convenient application and residence on the skin. The composition is particularly suitable for topical photoprotective applications associated with ultraviolet-radiation-induced oxidative stress and photoaging. (Accompanied Figure No. 1-11)
