Abstract: ABSTRACT AMBIENT VISIBLE-LIGHT PHOTOCHEMICAL CONVERSION OF CARBONACEOUS MATERIALS INTO C1 AND C2 PRODUCTS USING HYDROGEN PEROXIDE The present disclosure relates to a catalyst-free, visible-light-assisted photochemical process for converting carbonaceous materials into C1- and C2-oxygenated products using hydrogen peroxide under ambient conditions. The process comprises contacting a carbonaceous precursor with hydrogen peroxide and irradiating the reaction mixture using visible light generated from an ordinary bulb source. Reactive oxygen species generated from hydrogen peroxide selectively oxidize defect-rich and structurally disordered carbon domains, resulting in oxidative fragmentation of the carbonaceous framework into soluble oxygenated products. The carbonaceous precursor may comprise coal, biomass, crop residues biochar, soot, sludge, activated carbon, graphene-based materials, carbon nanotubes, and industrial carbonaceous waste. The process produces acetic acid as a dominant liquid-phase product along with minor quantities of formic acid, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen. The disclosed process provides a simple, energy-efficient, and industrially applicable route for valorization of low-value carbonaceous materials. Figure 1 is the reference figure.
