Abstract: A method (100) for preparing amino-acid-functionalized gold nanoparticles (200) for targeted cancer drug delivery includes preparing (102) an aqueous gold precursor solution, preparing (104) an amino acid solution including cysteine and glycine, combining (106) the solutions at a pH in the range of 7 to 10 and at a temperature in the range of 25°C to 80°C, reducing (108) gold ions to elemental gold to form gold nanoparticles (202) having a diameter in the range of 10 nm to 50 nm, functionalizing (110) the gold nanoparticle surface with an amino acid functional layer (204) derived from cysteine and glycine, and purifying (112) the amino-acid-functionalized gold nanoparticles. A functionalized gold nanoparticle composition (200) includes a gold nanoparticle core (202), an amino acid functional layer (204) including cysteine and glycine surrounding the core, and an anticancer therapeutic agent (206) associated with the amino acid functional layer.
