Abstract: The present invention relates to an acoustic traffic density estimation. The system comprises an edge node mounted above a roadway and including a linear microphone array and an edge processing unit, wherein the microphones are arranged with predefined spacing inside a weatherproof enclosure and the edge processing unit captures audio signals and performs local processing; a signal processing module adapted to perform spectral isolation within 20 Hz to 200 Hz, determine spatial localization using time difference of arrival, apply beamforming with null steering to suppress cross-axis interference, and perform de-duplication by merging acoustic signals with greater than 95% similarity; a telemetry module adapted to transmit processed metadata using MQTT protocol; and a cloud orchestration module adapted to compute a traffic density index based on root mean square energy, dynamically extend traffic signal duration when a threshold is exceeded, detect siren frequencies between 700 Hz and 1.5 kHz for signal pre-emption, and estimate queue length using spatial acoustic mapping.
