Abstract: AN AFFORDABLE SMART ROUTER ADAPTER FOR RELIABLE INTERNET ACCESS IN RURAL COMMUNITIES The invention relates to a low-cost smart Wi-Fi router adapter designed to provide uninterrupted internet connectivity in rural and remote areas affected by frequent power outages. The adapter comprises an AC-DC adapter for converting mains supply (230 V, 50 Hz) into 12 V DC, a rechargeable Li-Ion battery (11.1 V, 6000 mAh) connected through a battery management system (BMS), and a bidirectional converter (BDC) configured to operate in buck mode during charging and boost mode during discharging. A switching regulator (XL6009) ensures a constant regulated output of 12 V to the router under varying operating conditions. The BMS monitors charging, discharging, and protection functions, while sensing circuits including a voltage divider and ACS712 current sensor measure battery voltage and current. An Arduino Uno microcontroller processes these signals and executes state-of-charge (SOC) estimation using two methods: a Kalman filter-based approach and a rate-limited voltage-based approach. The system is validated through MATLAB simulation and hardware testing, demonstrating stable operation, accurate SOC estimation, and reliable backup capability of up to 6 hours depending on router load. The adapter is compact, portable, and cost-effective, with a manufacturing cost significantly lower than existing commercial router backup systems, making it suitable for rural deployment and enhancing digital connectivity.
