Abstract: ABSTRACT [0024] Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, pose potential threats in locations such as airports, military bases, and public spaces. Nevertheless, it is not easy to detect drones under challenging scenarios like low illumination and high environmental noise. The existing techniques used in drone detection are not accurate because they use a single type of sensing technique such as camera images, infrared, and audio signals. This invention aims at overcoming this challenge through proposing an advanced technique for the detection of drones based on multimodal information. It uses three types of information sources namely; visual information from RGB video frames, thermal information from infrared data, and finally auditory information from audio signals. Deep neural networks are utilized to learn spatial-temporal features from RGB and infrared video streams. Temporal features can be obtained from sequence input videos by employing suitable methods. Audio input signals are transformed into spectrogram form so as to recognize unique audio patterns of UAVs. The benefit of such an approach is that, besides the solution being able to work effectively despite changes in the environment, detection precision will also improve. In fact, this approach has been realized as a software program on a computer, making it a valuable tool for detecting drones.
