Abstract: The present disclosure provides an electric drive system (10) for a vehicle. The electric drive system (10) comprises a first planetary gear system (20), and a second planetary gear system (30) that is a compound planetary gear system, comprises an inner planetary gear set (30a) and an outer planetary gear set (30b). The second planetary gear system (30) comprises a two-sided gear (33) configured between the inner planetary gear set (30a) and the outer planetary gear set (30b) such that the two-sided gear (33) works an inner ring gear of the inner planetary gear set (30a) as well as an outer sun gear for the outer planetary gear set (30b). The electric drive system (10) is configured to function as any of an open differential, a locking differential, and a limited-slip differential, while reducing overall weight of the vehicle, leading to improved vehicle range and efficiency.
