Abstract: The present invention provides an ESIPT-active Schiff base fluorescent probe based on a TREN-functionalized 1,8-naphthalimide scaffold, together with a process for its preparation and a method of using the same for detecting Zn(II) ions in water. The probe is capable of selective Zn(II) recognition in the presence of competing metal ions and exhibits fluorescence enhancement associated with suppression of ESIPT and activation of chelation-enhanced fluorescence upon complex formation. The probe further demonstrates reversible response behaviour and may be employed for trace zinc detection in aqueous and mixed-solvent systems, including real water samples. Formula (I)
