Abstract: AN IoT-BASED ACCIDENT DETECTION AND AUTOMATED EMERGENCY RESPONSE SYSTEM WITH SELF-ESCALATING HOSPITAL NOTIFICATION ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION In recent years, road accidents have emerged as a major cause of preventable deaths , where the actual severity of an injury is often the delay in receiving emergency medical assistance. When a rider or driver is goes unconscious after a collision, there is frequently no bystander available to alert emergency contacts or nearby hospitals, resulting in the loss of critical time during the medically significant period , commonly referred as the golden hour. Existing accident-alert devices are largely limited to notifying a small number of predefined personal contacts through a single message, which do not extend to hospitals, nor do they provide for automatic escalation should the initial recipient fail to respond. There therefore exists a need for a system capable of both automatically detecting a genuine accident and reliably summoning emergency medical assistance without dependence on any single point of human or institutional response. In this project, a vehicle-mountable hardware unit is designed using a microcontroller with a motion sensor and a vibration sensor, which together evaluate orientation deviation, impact- jerk magnitude, and sustained vibration to determine, with reduced false-positive occurrence, whether a genuine collision has taken place. A manually operable override mechanism, coupled with an audible and visual alert, provides a defined interval within which an inadvertent detection may be cancelled prior to any notification being dispatched. Upon confirmation, the hardware unit communicates the event via a short-range wireless communication link to a companion mobile application , which retrieves the live geographic location of the vehicle and transmits this information, together with the identity of the vehicle operator, to a pre-registered emergency contact and to the nearest available medical facility through a cloud-based real-time database. The mobile application further comprises a dedicated interface for medical facilities, enabling them to view, accept, and respond to incoming accident notifications. In the event that the medical facility to which an accident notification is assigned does not acknowledge the same within a defined time interval, the system automatically reassigns the notification to the next-nearest eligible medical facility within a predetermined geographic radius, and continues this process iteratively until an acknowledgment is received or no further eligible facility remains within range. As a safeguard against the unavailability of mobile internet connectivity, notifications are additionally transmitted through cellular short message service, ensuring that the emergency contact and the assigned medical facility are informed regardless of network conditions. The entire system thereby provides a self-escalating, automated emergency-response mechanism intended to reduce the time elapsed between a vehicular accident and the commencement of medical attention, with particular relevance to two-wheeler riders and to regions with limited immediate bystander availability.
