Abstract: The present invention provides an iron ion battery (IIB) based pouch cell. The IIB pouch cell of the present invention is comprising of an iron sheet (2) as anode, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) coated on carbon cloth (4) as cathode, a separator (3) of Whatman filter paper, soaked in FeCl3/ethylene glycol as non-aqueous electrolyte that are packed in laminated aluminum sheets (1). The iron ions intercalate the layered rGO coated on carbon cloth during discharging, and then de-intercalate during charging, while iron oxidizes and gets reduced during the discharging and charging process. The present invention replaced the traditional aqueous electrolyte with a cost-effective non-aqueous electrolyte that improved specific capacity, cycle life and mitigated the side reaction and further, the larger interlayer spacing of rGO enabled the easier intercalation/de-intercalation of iron ions compared to existing systems.
