Abstract: The present invention discloses a biodegradable antibacterial composite film for active food packaging based on carboxymethyl cellulose incorporated with copper oxide nanoparticles and oregano essential oil. The film is prepared by solution casting using glycerol as plasticizer, Tween 80 as emulsifier, and citric acid as cross- linking agent. The developed film exhibits strong antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, eliminating planktonic cells within four hours and producing inhibition zones above twenty-five millimetres. The film also demonstrates ultraviolet-A transmittance below eight percent, visible transparency above eighty-six percent, reduced water vapour permeability up to fifty percent, enhanced mechanical strength, and significant antioxidant activity. Packaging studies on fresh paneer show shelf-life extension from two to three days to at least twelve days at 4 °C, with no detectable Staphylococcus aureus after the third day in inoculated samples.
