Abstract: An apparatus for detecting air bubbles in fluid delivery tube that includes housing configured to detachably engage exterior surface of fluid delivery tube, infrared emitter positioned within housing on first side of fluid delivery tube, an infrared receiver positioned within housing on second side of fluid delivery tube opposite infrared emitter, microcontroller operatively coupled to infrared receiver and configured to obtain sequential infrared intensity measurements from infrared receiver, apply exponentially weighted moving average filtering operation to infrared intensity measurements, periodically update baseline infrared intensity value during intervals in which no air bubble event is detected, compare filtered infrared intensity measurements against baseline infrared intensity value, and determine air bubble event when filtered infrared intensity measurements fall below predefined percentage threshold relative to baseline infrared intensity value and alarm subsystem configured to activate at least one visual indicator and at least one audible indicator responsive to determined air bubble event.
