Inventors include Dr. Seeni Mohamed Aliar Maraikkayar; Dr. Tamil Selvi; and Dr. Parisa Beham.
The application for the patent was published on July 03, 2026, under issue no. 27/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to an automated neonatal jaundice severity estimation device utilizing smartphone-based image processing and artificial intelligence techniques for rapid, non-invasive, and cost-effective assessment of bilirubin-related skin discoloration in newborn infants. Neonatal jaundice is a common condition characterized by elevated bilirubin levels, and timely diagnosis is essential to prevent severe complications such as kernicterus and neurological impairment. The proposed system comprises a smartphone imaging module, a standardized illumination chamber, a calibration reference card, an image acquisition interface, and an intelligent processing unit configured to analyze skin and scleral coloration from captured images. The device employs advanced image preprocessing algorithms, color normalization techniques, ambient light compensation, and machine learning models to estimate jaundice severity with high accuracy. Images obtained from selected anatomical regions such as the forehead, chest, abdomen, and sclera are processed to extract colorimetric biomarkers associated with bilirubin concentration. The extracted features are compared against validated neonatal bilirubin datasets to generate a bilirubin severity score and risk classification. The system further integrates cloud connectivity, electronic health record compatibility, and telemedicine support to facilitate remote neonatal monitoring in rural and resource-limited healthcare settings. Automated alerts and recommendations are generated for healthcare professionals and caregivers when bilirubin levels exceed predefined thresholds. The invention eliminates the need for frequent invasive blood sampling, reduces diagnostic delays, and enhances accessibility to neonatal screening services. The proposed device offers a portable, affordable, scalable, and clinically reliable solution for early jaundice detection and continuous monitoring, thereby improving neonatal healthcare outcomes and reducing infant morbidity and mortality associated with untreated hyperbilirubinemia.
