Abstract: ABSTRACT The present invention proposes a Li-Fi based underwater voice communication system designed for real-time communication in underwater environments. Conventional underwater communication systems mainly rely on acoustic or radio frequency communication methods, both of which suffer from several limitations such as high latency, low bandwidth, signal attenuation, bulky hardware, and poor real-time performance. The proposed system addresses these limitations by using visible green light for underwater voice transmission. The invention utilizes the green optical spectrum in the wavelength range of approximately 520–532 nm because green light experiences comparatively lower absorption and scattering in water. The system mainly consists of a transmitter section and a receiver section. The transmitter section includes a microphone module, microcontroller, PWM modulation circuitry, and a green LED or laser source. The receiver section consists of a photodetector, transimpedance amplifier, filtering circuitry, signal processing unit, and speaker output. Voice signals captured by the microphone are converted into electrical signals and processed by the microcontroller. These signals are transformed into pulse width modulated optical intensity variations that drive the green LED or laser source. The modulated optical signal propagates through water and is received by the photodetector at the receiver side. The received signal is amplified, filtered, reconstructed, and reproduced as audible voice communication in real time. Experimental testing demonstrated reliable short-range communication up to approximately 3 meters in clear water conditions with good audio clarity, signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 20 dB, and low bit error rates under favourable operating conditions. The system also provides reduced electromagnetic interference, low power consumption, secure directional communication, and silent operation compared to conventional acoustic communication systems. The invention is suitable for underwater diver communication, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs), underwater sensor networks, marine research, underwater rescue operations, industrial underwater inspection systems, and tactical underwater communication applications. The proposed architecture can further be extended for future underwater IoT systems, adaptive modulation techniques, and hybrid optical-acoustic communication networks.
