Abstract: Bidirectional Electric Vehicle Charging System for Microgrid Energy Management ABSTRACT A bidirectional electric vehicle charging system for microgrid energy management includes one or more bidirectional charging units, an energy management controller, electrical sensing devices, communication interfaces, renewable energy sources, a stationary battery energy-storage system, controllable loads, and a utility-grid connection. Each charging unit is comprised of controllable power- conversion stages to transfer electrical energy between an electric vehicle battery and the microgrid. The energy management controller receives operational data to select a grid-to-vehicle charging mode, vehicle-to-microgrid discharging mode, standby mode, renewable-energy absorption mode, peak-shaving mode, or emergency- support mode. The controller schedules the charging of the vehicles during periods of low electricity cost, such as during off-peak hours, and when there is excess renewable energy available. The controlled discharging of the vehicles is performed during peak microgrid demand, reduced renewable energy output, grid disturbance, or islanded operation of the microgrid. Power is allocated to the connected vehicles based on the vehicle's battery capacity, available energy, converter rating, mobility requirements, and microgrid operating constraints. In order to maintain power balance, support critical controllable loads, reduce grid import, limit peak microgrid demand, improve utilization of renewable energy, and enhance overall microgrid resilience, the system coordinates the batteries of the electric vehicles with the stationary battery energy-storage system and local generation. Protective functions are included to prevent power transfer when various operating parameters exceed predetermined limits including voltage, current, temperature, frequency, state of charge, communication status, and converter operation. The disclosed arrangement enables the connected electric vehicles to function as controllable mobile energy-storage resources while ensuring that the minimum required amount of energy is always available for transportation, and that reliable operation of both grid-connected and islanded microgrids is supported.
