Abstract: ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION The invention relates to a bifunctionalized cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) catalytic membrane for conversion of levulinic acid to gamma-valerolactone. The crosslinked CNC membrane incorporates Brønsted acidic groups for lactonization and immobilized metal nanoparticles selected from ruthenium, nickel, or copper for catalytic transfer hydrogenation using secondary alcohols as hydrogen donors. Supported on a porous substrate for thermal and mechanical stability at 140–165 °C, the membrane enables simultaneous reaction and selective permeation, enhancing conversion, minimizing metal leaching, and eliminating high-pressure hydrogen, thereby providing a sustainable process for bio-based GVL production.
