MUMBAI, India, July 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611061216 A) filed by National Institute Of Technology Nit, Srinagar on May 14, 2026, for Bio-Based Cobalt-Chitosan Mof Modified Asphalt Binder For Enhanced Rutting Resistance And Fatigue Life.

Inventors include Dr. Vivek; Hafsa Yaseen Qureshi; and Bhupendra Singh.

Abstract: The present invention is a cobalt-chitosan-terephthalate metal-organic framework (MOF) modified asphalt binder made at ambient temperature in order to improve rutting resistance and fatigue life. The MOF combines chitosan, terephthalic acid, and cobalt ions to create a stable hybrid structure with a large surface area and robust interfacial bonding. The substance creates a reinforced micro- network when mixed with bitumen, which increases stiffness at high temperatures while maintaining flexibility at low ones. The improved binder shows better resistance to thermal cracking, cyclic loading, and permanent deformation. The synthesis process is straightforward, scalable, and energy-efficient. Furthermore, the invention is appropriate for long-lasting pavement applications in cold climates because the use of bio-based chitosan promotes sustainability.
