MUMBAI, India, Aug. 12 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202631010928 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Kharagpur on February 02, 2026, for Bio-Based Elastomeric Vitrimer Via Multiple Associative Dynamic Networks.

Inventors include Dr. Nikhil K. Singha; Ms. Bhavya Parameswaran; and Dr. Tuhin Subhra Pal.

The application for the patent was published on August 07, 2026, under issue no. 32/2026.

Abstract: Abstract Title: Bio-based Elastomeric Vitrimer Via Multiple Associative Dynamic Networks The present invention introduces a novel crosslinking concept that integrates imine and acetal metathesis reactions within elastomeric networks. This dual dynamic linkage design allows for thermally and chemically reversible bond exchange, enabling self-healing, recyclability, and reprocessability in rubber materials, features rarely achieved simultaneously in conventional elastomers. The invention provides a simple and catalyst-free strategy to construct adaptive polymer networks from epoxy-functionalized bio-based elastomers and bio-derived aldehyde or acetal components. This approach expands the understanding of dynamic covalent chemistry in rubber systems and offers an environmentally benign alternative to traditional vulcanization methods. Given the global movement toward sustainable, repairable, and circular polymer materials, this invention holds strong commercial potential in the near to mid future (2–8 years), particularly in sectors such as automotive, adhesives, footwear, and flexible electronics where durability and recyclability are desired.
