Abstract: BIO-BASED MULTI-LAYER GREYWATER PURIFICATION SYSTEM USING ALGINATE-ENCAPSULATED ENZYMES AND BACTERIA A bio-based multi-layer greywater purification system offers a sustainable treatment of greywater using enzymatic degradation, catalytic improvement, and plant-fiber filtration. A cylindrical housing assembly (201) having a bolted cover (206 – 207) comprises three sequential chambers. The first biological chamber (203) has sodium alginate beads encapsulating the enzymes lipase, protease and amylase and Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas putida cultures to break down the organic pollutants, reducing BOD and COD. The catalyst chamber (204) includes alginate beads with Fe2+ and Mn2+ catalysts, secondary enzymes, and triggering bacterial agents to speed up degradation of recalcitrant contaminants. The plant-fiber chamber (205) combines the coconut coir, jute fiber, activated charcoal and biosurfactant degrading bacterial beads to trap the suspended solids and adsorb the residual impurities. Greywater flows in through the input module (202), enzymatic breakdown (101-103), catalytic acceleration (104-107) and fiber filtration (108-109), purified water is collected at the output module (206) for agricultural irrigation and industrial non-potable reuse. This approach increases purification efficiency, reduces the need for fresh water, reduces wastewater discharge and facilitates decentralized, low-energy water reuse.
