Abstract: Biocompatible polymer nanocomposites for enhanced barrier properties in biodegradable packaging are disclosed. The nanocomposite comprises a biodegradable, biocompatible polymer matrix such as polylactic acid, a polyhydroxyalkanoate, or a compatibilized blend; a high-aspect-ratio nanofiller such as layered silicate, nanocellulose, or layered double hydroxide at about one to ten percent by weight, dispersed in a substantially exfoliated state and preferentially oriented in the article plane so as to establish a tortuous diffusion path; and a compatibilizing interfacial agent that is food-contact safe, biocompatible, thermally stable at melt processing temperature, and compostable, selected from phospholipids, peptide derivatives, chitosan, alkyl polyglucosides, organosilanes, and reactive polyester compatibilizers, expressly excluding the thermally labile and toxic quaternary ammonium surfactants of the prior art. Masterbatch melt compounding with controlled specific mechanical energy, followed by extensional forming and optional biaxial stretching, achieves exfoliation and orientation industrially. Oxygen and water vapor permeabilities are reduced severalfold with retained clarity, mechanical properties, migration compliance, and whole-composite compostability
