MUMBAI, India, July 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611065156 A) filed by Sharda University on May 23, 2026, for Biodegradable Cmc/Pva Hydrogel Crosslinked With Citric Acid And Process Thereof.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a biodegradable and biocompatible hydrogel comprising carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and citric acid as a crosslinking agent, and a process for preparation thereof. The process comprises alkalization of cellulose using sodium hydroxide and isopropanol, etherification using monochloroacetic acid to synthesize CMC having a degree of substitution of approximately 0.7 ± 0.04, preparation of a PVA solution, formation of a homogeneous polymer blend, addition of citric acid, casting, and sequential thermal curing at about 60°C and 120°C to obtain a crosslinked hydrogel film. The hydrogel exhibits improved gel fraction, swelling behaviour, biodegradability, flexibility, structural stability, and controlled release characteristics. The hydrogel sheet is transparent, rehydratable, environmentally friendly, and suitable for biomedical, pharmaceutical, tissue engineering, wound dressing, and controlled release applications.
