MUMBAI, India, June 22 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202631066944 A) filed by Dr. Sumita Banerjee; and Dr. Saikat Mukherjee on May 28, 2026, for Biodegradable Ergonomic Footwear System Comprising Water Hyacinth And Aloe-Based Biocomposite.
Inventors include Dr. Sumita Banerjee; and Dr. Saikat Mukherjee.
The application for the patent was published on June 12, 2026, under issue no. 24/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a fully biodegradable footwear system derived substantially from water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) biomass and aloe vera-based biomaterials. The footwear comprises a woven water hyacinth stem-fibre outsole, a density-graded hot-pressed pith-board structural layer reinforced with aloe vera cuticle fibres, a phase-adaptive cushioning layer, and a blended Bio-Wax Coating Version 2 comprising aloe vera cuticle wax, carnauba wax, candelilla wax, and natural rubber latex. The invention further provides a solvent-free supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) process for aloe vera wax extraction and cellulose aerogel drying using a common processing apparatus. The footwear system includes slipper and clog configurations with steam-bent or thermoformed pith-board uppers and detachable biodegradable insoles. The invention provides improved moisture resistance, cushioning performance, structural durability, and aerobic biodegradability without generating persistent microplastics. (Reference Figure 1).
