Abstract: The present invention relates to the development o f a biodegradable food packaging film prepared from tapioca starch reinforced with banana pseudostem fibre and plasticised using aloe vera gel. The invention provides an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative to conventional petroleum-based plastic packaging materials, which are non-biodegradable and harmful to the environment. Tapioca starch acts as the primary biodegradable polymer matrix, while banana pseudostem fibre, obtained from agricultural waste, serves as a natural reinforcing material to improve the mechanical strength and durability o f the film. Aloe vera gel is incorporated as a natural plasticiser to enhance flexibility, reduce brittleness, and improve the overall biodegradation behaviour of the film. Citric acid is used as a natural cross-linking agent to improve water resistance and structural stability. The preparation method includes the collection and treatment of banana pseudostem fibre, the extraction of aloe vera gel, the gelatinisation o f tapioca starch, the mixing o f all components, the solution casting, and the controlled drying to obtain thin biodegradable films. The developed film demonstrates improved tensile strength, flexibility, biodegradability, and suitability for food packaging applications. The invention effectively utilises renewable and agricultural waste materials, reduces dependence on synthetic plastics and chemical plasticisers, and supports sustainable packaging technology. The biodegradable film can be used in food wrapping, disposable packaging, and environmentally friendly storage applications.
