MUMBAI, India, July 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641082924 A) filed by Jss College Of Pharmacy, Ooty Jss Academy Of Higher Education & Research on July 06, 2026, for Biodegradable Hybrid Nanocomposite Material For Microplastic-Free Pharmaceutical Packaging.

Inventors include Dr Gowthamarajan Kuppusamy; Mr Jey Kumar Pachiyappan; Mr Shakthi Priyan S; Dr Thava Palanisami; and Dr Veera Venkata Sathyanarayana Reddy Karri.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a biodegradable hybrid nanocomposite material for microplastic-free pharmaceutical packaging and a method for preparing the same. The biodegradable hybrid nanocomposite comprises a biodegradable polymer matrix including polylactic acid (PLA), lignin extracted from chemically treated sisal fibres, glycerol as a plasticizing agent, and zinc oxide nanoparticles uniformly dispersed throughout the polymer matrix. The synergistic interaction among the constituent components forms a homogeneous composite network exhibiting enhanced mechanical strength, improved flexibility, superior thermal stability, reduced moisture and oxygen permeability, enhanced hydrophobicity, ultraviolet shielding capability, antibacterial activity, and pharmaceutical compatibility. The hybrid nanocomposite is suitable for manufacturing pharmaceutical packaging articles including films, blister packs, sachets, pouches, strip packs, multilayer packaging structures, containers, and related packaging products using solvent casting, extrusion, thermoforming, lamination, or additive manufacturing techniques. The invention provides an environmentally sustainable and microplastic-free alternative to conventional petroleum-derived pharmaceutical packaging materials while improving protection of pharmaceutical formulations and extending product shelf-life.
