Abstract: Biodegradable Menstrual Pad with pH-Activated Antimicrobial Coating for Self-Sterilization This invention describes a biodegradable menstrual hygiene pad integrating banana fiber and okra mucilage as natural superabsorbents, combined with a pH-activated antimicrobial coating for self-sterilization upon moisture contact. The pad eliminates synthetic superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) and plastic-based components, ensuring enhanced fluid retention, prolonged dryness, and eco-friendly disposal. The antimicrobial layer, infused with turmeric-derived curcumin and citric acid, releases antiseptic agents upon exposure to menstrual fluid, inhibiting bacterial growth and infection risks. A cornstarch-based biopolymer backing provides breathability and leak protection while maintaining full compostability. Designed to decompose within four to six months, the pad offers a cost-effective, non-toxic alternative to conventional synthetic sanitary products. The invention is particularly suited for sustainable menstrual care solutions in resource-limited settings, ensuring hygiene, environmental safety, and affordability while addressing the challenges of waste management and microbial contamination in menstrual health.
