Abstract: The development of biodegradable tote bags made from banana fiber represents a sustainable solution to the growing environmental challenges posed by synthetic and chemically processed carry bags. Banana fiber, extracted from the pseudostem of the banana plant, is a naturally strong, lightweight, and renewable material that often goes unused after harvest. Utilizing this otherwise discarded agricultural residue not only reduces waste but also provides an eco-friendly alternative to conventional tote bag materials. This project focuses on designing, producing, and evaluating a biodegradable tote bag that offers durability, aesthetic appeal, and complete environmental safety throughout its life cycle. The proposed tote bag is crafted from woven banana fiber fabric, selected for its high tensile strength, breathability, and ability to withstand daily use. The production process employs chemical free, relying instead on natural retting, washing, and plant-based finishing methods to preserve biodegradability. The bag is stitched using natural fiber threads, ensuring that every component decomposes without leaving toxins or microplastics behind. Through composability testing, structural analysis, and material performance evaluation, the project demonstrates that banana fiber is a viable and environmentally responsible replacement for cotton, polyester, and canvas tote bags. This biodegradable tote bag offers significant benefits, including reduced carbon footprint, zero plastic content, and complete decomposition under natural conditions within a reasonable timeframe. Its development supports sustainable fashion, promotes agricultural value addition, and encourages consumers to shift toward greener lifestyle choices.
