MUMBAI, India, July 30 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541004613 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Tirupati on July 21, 2025, for Biopolymer-Reinforced Metal Oxide And/Or Oxyhydroxide Nanocomposite For Shrinkage Mitigation In Concrete.

Inventors include Dr. Shihabudheen M. Maliyekkal; Dr. A. V. Rahul; M. S. V. Naga Jyothi; and Divya S. Kurup.

The application for the patent was published on July 24, 2026, under issue no. 30/2026.

Abstract: The present invention relates to methods for preparing a biopolymer-metal oxide-based nanocomposite and a concrete composition incorporating the nanocomposite. The method for preparing the nanocomposite comprises adding one or more metal precursor compounds to a biopolymer solution, reacting the resulting mixture with an alkaline solution to form a jelly precipitate, aging the precipitate, and subsequently filtering, washing, drying and reducing the nanocomposite to a particle size suitable for incorporation into concrete. The method for preparing the concrete composition comprises adding the nanocomposite to a portion of the total mixing water, subjecting the nanocomposite in the mixing water to vacuum to obtain a surface-saturated nanocomposite, and adding the surface-saturated nanocomposite together with the mixing water to a wet concrete mix to obtain the concrete composition. The resulting concrete composition exhibits reduced plastic shrinkage, drying shrinkage and/or autogenous shrinkage while maintaining or improving one or more mechanical properties. Figs. 1 & 3
