Abstract: A centralized protection and monitoring system for substation automation includes a process level having a plurality of intelligent merging units (IMU 1, IMU 2, IMU 3, IMU 4) configured to digitize analog data from field equipment including current transformers (CT) and potential transformers (PT), and to communicate with circuit breakers (CB) via a standardized Ethernet interface. A bay level includes protection and control equipment configured to receive sampled values from the intelligent merging units and to transmit Generic Object Oriented Substation Event messages for event-driven control. A station level includes a centralized protection and monitoring unit having a human-machine interface (HMI) and configured to consolidate protection functions. The system implements IEC 61850 communication protocols including an object-oriented hierarchical data model utilizing logical nodes that are virtual representations of physical equipment. (FIG. 1)
