MUMBAI, India, July 31 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202411100356 A) filed by Council Of Scientific And Industrial Research; and Ntpc Limited on December 18, 2024, for Co2 Sequestered Sintered Lightweight Aggregates From Industrial Wastes And Process For Preparation Thereof.

Abstract: The present invention discloses sequestering CO2 in artificial lightweight sintered aggregates for developing lightweight building materials and process for the preparation thereof. The process involves mixing argillaceous and calcareous waste in various ratios, forming spherical aggregates. The aggregates are sintered at 2- 45°C/min and held for 10-180 minutes. The sintered pellets are then soaked in a solution of lime: water in a ratio of 1:10-1:20 for a period of 3-5 hours before undergoing carbonation in pressure pot and carbonation chamber. Aggregates with higher argillaceous waste content show calcium alumino silicate as the major phase, while those with more calcareous waste exhibit calcium silicate phases. The carbonated aggregates demonstrate 2-15% CO2 uptake, 1-6 MPa single pellet strength, 750-900 kg/m3 bulk density, and 14-25% water absorption. The aggregates offer advantages such as lightweight, low bulk density, high single pellet strength, low water absorption, and CO2 sequestration. They meet relevant specifications and can significantly enhance building thermal efficiency and reduce structural dead load.
