An example point cloud compression decoder includes one or more memories configured to store the point cloud data and one or more processors operatively coupled to the one or more memories. The one or more processors are configured to determine a type-length-value (TLV) type of a current data unit of the point cloud data, the TLV type being indicative of a reference status of the current data unit. The one or more processors are configured to determine, based on the TLV type, the reference status. The one or more processors are configured to decode the current data unit in accordance the reference status.
