Abstract: Abstract COMPACT DUAL-BAND DUAL-POLARIZED WEARABLE ANTENNA WITH A VIA-FREE METASURFACE The present invention relates to a compact wearable antenna system (10) comprising a ground plane (12), a via-free double-layer anisotropic metasurface (22) disposed over the ground plane (12) and comprising a plurality of anisotropic double-layer unit cells (56), and a radiating structure (24) disposed over the metasurface (22) and comprising an unbalanced coplanar waveguide ground plane (28), a feed network (34), and a first straight radiator (44) and a second straight radiator (46). The via-free double-layer anisotropic metasurface (22), devoid of any metallic via, is configured to exhibit a zeroth-order resonant mode with a first-axis-polarized phase-reflection characteristic in a first frequency band (76), and a first-order resonant mode with a second-axis-polarized phase-reflection characteristic in a second frequency band (78), a phase difference (64) between the two characteristics being maintained substantially constant over the second frequency band (78). The feed network (34) generates the first frequency band (76) to produce an omnidirectional, linearly polarized radiation pattern for on-body communication, while the first and second straight radiators (44, 46) generate the second frequency band (78) to produce a dual-beam, circularly polarized radiation pattern for off-body communication.
