Abstract: The invention relates to a compact wideband antenna system with improved broadside radiation characteristics comprises a microstrip-fed slot antenna radiating element and a structurally decoupled metasurface reflector array positioned underneath across a predetermined air gap. The radiating element includes a defected ground structure configured as an L-shaped slot to optimize electrical current channels and broaden impedance bandwidth. The metasurface reflector array features a periodic arrangement of multi-layer unit cells establishing an epsilon-negative property over an operating frequency band of 6.6 GHz to 8.5 GHz. Each unit cell includes a top layer with two concentric rectangular conducting rings having capacitive slot cuts, and a bottom layer with a single continuous rectangular conducting ring. This configuration establishes an inductive-capacitive resonance that controls the electromagnetic reflection phase. Consequently, reflected waves constructively interfere with broadside directed waves, minimizing surface-wave leakage, enhancing front-to-back radiation ratio, and achieving a peak broadside gain of approximately 7.5 dBi.
