Abstract: The present invention relates to a composite adsorbent system designed for the efficient removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from wastewater, a critical environmental challenge. The system comprises a composite material that integrates Cr(VI) tolerant bacteria and iron nanoparticles, encapsulated within sodium alginate beads, and housed in a fixed bed adsorption column. The Cr(VI) tolerant bacteria, isolated from industrial effluents, are capable of adsorbing Cr(VI) even in high concentrations, while the iron nanoparticles, characterized by high surface area and reactivity, enhance the adsorption and reduction of Cr(VI). The sodium alginate beads ensure the stability and integrity of the composite material, preventing nanoparticle dispersion. The fixed bed adsorption column is configured for continuous flow operation, optimizing contact between the wastewater and the adsorbent, thereby facilitating effective Cr(VI) removal. Additionally, a breakthrough curve analysis module is included to evaluate the column's performance, providing real-time data on Cr(VI) concentration in the effluent.
