The application for the patent was published on August 07, 2026, under issue no. 32/2026.
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a composite membrane comprising a polymer matrix and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) filler dispersed within the polymer matrix for microplastic separation and water purification applications. The method comprises preparing ZIF-8 powder using a zinc precursor and an imidazole-based linker, followed by incorporation of the ZIF-8 powder into a polymer solution to form a homogeneous mixture. The mixture is cast onto a substrate and immersed in a non-solvent water bath to obtain the composite membrane. The developed membrane exhibits enhanced porosity, improved water permeability, anti-fouling properties, antibacterial activity, photocatalytic behaviour, and efficient microplastic removal performance. The incorporation of ZIF-8 nanoparticles enhances membrane functionality and enables effective removal of contaminants from wastewater and packaged drinking water. The present disclosure further provides a sustainable and efficient membrane suitable for advanced water purification and environmental remediation applications.
