Abstract: Disclosed is a cable-fault monitoring and isolation system for an underground power-distribution cable. A monitored cable section includes a power conductor, a voltage-sensing circuit coupled across the cable section, and a current-sensing circuit coupled to the conductor. A signal-conditioning path supplies conditioned electrical measurements to a controller storing reference thresholds that distinguish open-circuit, short-circuit, and insulation faults. A relay assembly has contacts connected in series with the power conductor and a drive input coupled to the controller. A wireless transceiver is also coupled to the controller. When a conditioned electrical measurement satisfies at least one stored threshold, the controller classifies the fault, drives the relay assembly to open the contacts and isolate the monitored cable section, and causes the wireless transceiver to send a fault report identifying the detected fault.
