Abstract: ABSTRACT CROSS-LINGUAL LEGAL QUESTION ANSWERING WITH ASSERTION-LEVEL VERIFICATION A method (200) for generating a verified answer to a legal query comprises receiving, by a query understanding and normalisation module (102), a query in a first natural language and generating a normalised query representation (202); generating, by a cross-lingual query bridging module (104), a cross-lingual query representation in a second natural language (204); retrieving, by a legal document retrieval module (106), candidate source passages from a legal document store (108) and assigning a persistent passage identifier to each (206); generating, by a draft answer generation module (110), a draft answer (208); decomposing, by an atomic legal assertion decomposition module (112), the draft answer into typed atomic legal assertions (210); verifying, by an assertion-level verification module (114), each assertion and assigning a verification state (212); selectively regenerating, by a selective regeneration controller (116), assertions not supported while retaining supported assertions in an immutable retained set (214); binding, by a source attribution and answer composition module (118), a passage identifier and span to each retained assertion (216); computing, by a component-wise confidence estimation framework (120), a confidence profile (218); and emitting the final answer with attributions and the confidence profile (220).
