Abstract: The project is an in-depth design of a crowd-sourced road hazard detection and reporting system based on vision-based classification and GPS positioning that is expected to enhance road maintenance and road safety in cities. Due to rapid urbanization and growing traffic, road damages in the form of potholes, waterlogging, debris, and broken infrastructure are common phenomena that are seldom reported and not addressed in time because of the use of manual tools of inspection. The proposed system builds on the potential of smartphones, artificial intelligence, and geospatial technologies in order to offer a solution to these challenges that is scalable and real time. The system allows the user to take photos of the road hazards using a cross-platform mobile application that is designed based on the current frameworks. A deep learning based vision model, e.g. YOLO, is used to process these images and automatically identify and categorize various types of hazards. GPS position data is added to each report, which
