Abstract: [001] The invention titled “Delta nudge tool for contour editing” proposes a novel way for editing of a contour, either open or closed, for making small changes to the it. In many problems, e.g. medical imaging, a case often arises where a contour or set of boundary points are given which are only approximately correct. It is required to quickly edit the contour to accurately represent the actual boundary. [002] The method is based on the interaction between a cursor that consists of two concentric circles and the contour based on user interactions. The contour points lying between the inner and outer circle are shifted by a fixed amount that is maximum at the middle and gradually reduces to zero at the two ends (where they cross the cursor). The direction of shift is outward if the cursor centre is inside the contour, and inward otherwise. The amount of shift increases by a small amount (usually double) if the contour points are lying inside the inner circle. The amount of shift can also be increased / decreased through user interaction. [003] It is also possible to edit the contour by entering three points such that two of them lie on the contour and the third one is in between the first and second point. In this case, the proposed method finds a best set of points that passes through the three points and maximizes the sum of the gradient at each point on the best path. The best path is then smoothened using a smoothing operator. [004] Thus, the user is not required to control the mouse or the pointing device very accurately. It is just sufficient to keep the contour between the inner and outer circle or inside the inner circle, depending on the amount of change to be made.
