MUMBAI, India, July 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641085194 A) filed by J. J. College Of Engineering Technology on July 11, 2026, for Design And Aerodynamic Optimization Of A Bank Of Helical Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines Integrated Within An Internal Air Duct For Electric Vehicles.

Abstract: This invention aims to generate electricity by using the airflow created when an electric vehicle (EV) is moving. The system uses helical Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTs) placed inside the front air duct of the vehicle. The electricity produced can be used to charge the auxiliary battery or power vehicle accessories such as sensors, cooling fans, and the infotainment system. Since the driving range of electric vehicles is an important concern, this system helps recover some of the energy that is normally lost due to airflow. Unlike conventional wind turbines mounted outside the vehicle, this design places the turbines inside a specially designed air duct in the front grille. This allows the air to flow efficiently while redcing additional air resistance (drag).The proposed system shows that ducted helical VAWTs can generate useful electrical power without significantly affecting the vehicle's aerodynamic performance. As a result, the system improves energy recovery and helps increase the overall efficiency of the electric vehicle.
