Abstract: This is a pragmatic and environmentally friendly solution to a persistent urban problem in the form of urban drain cleaning. A low cost, human powered, insulated debris collection device for storm water drainage is to be manufactured. The device comprises a conveyor system comprising scoops, moved using a chain and chain sprocket arrangement with a bike pedal mechanism. The conveyor device which has a lengthy reach into the drain utilizes readily available components from a bicycle (pedal, chain, and sprocket) to collect the debris. The debris carried by the belt is dropped into ,a debris container, connected to the frame. This whole system including the debris container, is mounted on a portable light steel frame mounted on wheels which enable it to be easily moved along the drains banks. The device has been modelled in CAD software and the load-bearing capacity of its structure has been tested. The entire system is built from stainless steel components, standard bicycle components and mild steel. The prototype developed has been found capable of removing solid waste of varied sizes and shapes with the use of neither power nor electricity. This project could serve as an innovative and sustainable form of ' sanitation in resource limited areas.
