The application for the patent was published on October 09, 2026, under issue no. 41/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a low-cost, SpO2-responsive smart ventilator (Smart Oxygen Concentrator System) that integrates continuous heart-rate and blood- oxygen saturation (SpO2) monitoring with automated, closed-loop control of oxygen delivery. The invention addresses the unavailability and high cost of conventional mechanical ventilators and fixed-flow oxygen concentrators, which cannot adapt their output to a patient's real-time physiological condition. The system uses an Arduino-compatible microcontroller interfaced with a MAX30100 pulse oximeter sensor to continuously acquire heart-rate and SpO2 data through photoplethysmography. A 10-second moving-average algorithm filters the raw heart-rate signal to remove motion-artifact noise. The measured SpO2 value is converted, through a defined inverse linear mapping function, into a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal that drives a MOSFET controlling a DC air pump, such that oxygen output automatically increases as SpO2 falls and decreases as SpO2 returns to a safe range. A 16x2 I2C LCD continuously displays heart rate, SpO2 percentage and the calculated output power, while an audible buzzer is triggered whenever SpO2 falls below a critical threshold (90%), or whenever tachycardia (heart rate above 130 BPM) or bradycardia (heart rate below 50 BPM) is detected. By combining physiological sensing, signal averaging, an inverse SpO2-to-PWM control algorithm, dual respiratory-and-cardiac alerting, and a low-cost hardware bill of materials (approximately INR 4,500), the invention provides an affordable, autonomous, closed- loop respiratory support device suited to home care, ambulances, rural clinics and emergency wards where conventional ICU-grade ventilators are unavailable.
