Abstract: Diabetic nephropathy is a progressive microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus and a leading contributor to end-stage renal disease globally. The present invention discloses the development and evaluation of advanced Curcuma longa-derived formulations comprising curcumin-loaded polymeric nanoparticles and curcumin-phospholipid phytosomal complexes for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy. The nanoparticle formulations are prepared by solvent evaporation using PLGA as the polymer matrix, while phytosomes are prepared by co-solvent evaporation with soy phosphatidylcholine. Both formulations demonstrate significantly enhanced physicochemical characteristics relative to native curcumin. In vivo evaluation in streptozotocin-induced diabetic Wistar rats demonstrates significant reduction of serum creatinine and uric acid levels and restoration of renal histoarchitecture. Nanoparticles exhibit superior nephroprotective efficacy, followed by phytosomes, both outperforming standard drug treatment, confirming the therapeutic potential of these plant-based advanced formulations.
