Abstract: ABSTRACT DEVELOPMENT OF SEAWEED-BASED BIOPOLYMERIC BIODEGRADABLE PACKAGING MATERIAL The invention provides an agar-based biodegradable packaging composition and a method for its synthesis, which finds use in sustainable packaging applications. The composition comprises of an agar-based matrix prepared from seaweed-derived agar dissolved in water under controlled elevated temperature, one or more plasticizers selected from sorbitol and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) intercalated between agar polymer chains, and a crosslinking agent, citric acid, introduced under controlled pH and temperature to mix with agar’s matrix followed by casting the mixture to form films of uniform thickness. Optionally, antimicrobial agents may be uniformly incorporated within the matrix. The crosslinking method involves heating the agar films after drying, added with plasticizers and citric acid for crosslinking, optionally incorporating antimicrobial agents, under regulated conditions.
