MUMBAI, India, Nov. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611110369 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Mandi on September 15, 2026, for Device And Method For In-Situ Monitoring Of Rhizosphere Environment.
Inventors include Ranjeet Kumar Jha; and Dipankar Deb.
The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a device for in-situ monitoring of a rhizosphere environment. The device comprises an elongated probe body (100), a sensor module (200) having spatially arranged impedance sensing electrodes (202), dielectric sensing electrodes (204), and ion-selective electrodes (206), a microcontroller (300), and a battery module (400). The microcontroller (300) selectively operates the electrodes according to a predefined measurement cycle and processes the acquired responses to determine volumetric water content, ionic activity, and impedance components. Further, the microcontroller applies a calibration function incorporating dielectric sensitivity, Nernstian ion-activity sensitivity, compensated calibration parameters, and a residual error to compensate the impedance-derived electrical response. Accordingly, the device provides a combined and compensated estimation of physicochemical properties of the root-soil environment, thereby improving the reliability and accuracy of in-situ rhizosphere monitoring.
