Abstract: In accordance with example embodiments of the invention there is at least a method and apparatus to perform establishing via an access network associated with a user equipment in a communication network, a packet data unit session for data transmission over the access network comprising the apparatus is caused to: based on information from a policy and charging control rule function to a session management function, the session management function creates rules comprising rules to identify the traffic transmitted over the packet data unit session indicating that the transmitted traffic is at least one of encrypted or integrity protected; wherein the information from a policy and charging control rule indicates that traffic encryption on the user plane can be omitted for the packet data unit session, and wherein the traffic is identified by an application ID or IP 5-tuple; based on the identifying, communicating between the session management function and the access network to cause disabling of at least one of user plane encryption or integrity protection for the traffic transmitted via the packet data unit session.
