The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of preparing a zirconium-based metal-organic framework (MOF) known as UiO-66 from post-consumer polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste. PET waste is hydrolysed in an alkaline medium to obtain terephthalic acid, also referred to herein as BDC (1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid), which is further used to synthesize UiO-66 in an aqueous medium in the presence of a zirconium compound and acetic acid as a coordinating ligand. The method of synthesizing UiO-66 is carried out without any organic solvent such as dimethylformamide (DMF). UiO-66 is prepared at different molar ratios of BDC to zirconium, viz. 1:1, 1:2 and 1:4, and this ratio is shown to govern the degree of Zr-carboxylate coordination and hence the completeness and morphology of the resulting metal- organic framework, with the 1:4 ratio giving the best-formed framework. The synthesized PET-derived UiO-66 has a nanorod structure. Therefore, the present invention describes a method of valorising plastic waste into a functional metal-organic framework material via a ratio-controlled, organic-solvent-free aqueous route.
