Abstract: The present invention relates to an eco-friendly and sustainable process for extracting natural dyes from fresh flowers and discarded temple floral waste, followed by phytochemical characterization and development of herbal cosmetic formulations utilizing the extracted natural pigments. The invention employs selected floral materials including Dahlia pinnata, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, Rosa damascena, Bougainvillea spectabilis, Aster amellus, and Chrysanthemum indicum as renewable sources of bioactive colouring compounds. The flowers are subjected to aqueous extraction under controlled temperature conditions to obtain natural dye extracts, which are subsequently characterized by qualitative phytochemical screening and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis to identify functional groups and bioactive phytoconstituents. The extracted dyes are further utilized for mordant-assisted textile dyeing and incorporated into herbal cosmetic formulations comprising eyeshadow, lip tint, and lip balm prepared using cosmetically acceptable natural excipients. The formulated products exhibit desirable colour intensity, uniformity, spreadability, physicochemical stability, moisturizing properties, and skin compatibility while avoiding the use of synthetic colourants. The invention additionally provides concentrated natural dye powders suitable for cosmetic and decorative applications. The disclosed process promotes effective utilization of biodegradable floral waste, minimizes environmental pollution, eliminates the use of hazardous extraction solvents, and provides value-added natural colourants possessing antioxidant and skin-protective properties. The invention is applicable in cosmetic, textile, pharmaceutical, herbal, and allied industries requiring safe, biodegradable, and sustainable natural colouring agents.
