Abstract: The present invention relates to an eco-friendly method for extracting cellulose nano-fibrils from Cannabis sativa waste, a process that efficiently utilizes agricultural biomass. The method involves drying the Cannabis sativa biomass to remove moisture, followed by immersion in a sodium carbonate solution to selectively solubilize non-cellulosic components such as hemicellulose and lignin, thereby preserving the cellulose structure. The extracted cellulose microfibers are then filtered, washed, and dried to achieve a highly crystalline and thermally stable product. These microfibers are pre-swelled in water to ensure uniform interaction with an ionic liquid, specifically 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([BMIM]Cl), which facilitates the dissolution of cellulose at a controlled temperature, resulting in cellulose nanofibrils with diameters ranging from 4 to 35 nm. The ionic liquid disrupts hydrogen bonds, aiding the transition to nanofibrils, and is recyclable, enhancing the method's sustainability.
