MUMBAI, India, Aug. 12 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541008462 A) filed by Virginia Tech India Research And Education Forum on January 31, 2025, for Edge-Functionalized Coal-Derived Graphene Oxide In Bacterial Nanocellulose Hydrogel For Active Wound Healing.

Inventors include Dr. Chithra Lekha P; and Dr. Roop L Mahajan.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a novel wound dressing material comprising of edge-functionalized coal-derived graphene oxide (C-GO) incorporated into bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) hydrogel. The invention provides a cost-effective freeze-thaw method to synthesize hydrogels by incorporating different weight percentages of C- GO onto BNC surfaces. The edge-functionalization of C-GO allows for superior dispersion and interaction with the BNC matrix, leading to enhanced physicochemical and wound-healing properties. The BNC/C-GO hydrogels demonstrate superior thermal stability, antibacterial properties, and wound healing rates compared to BNC hydrogels alone. The vitro studies, demonstrates that BNC/C-GO hydrogels promote better cell migration and exhibit enhanced antibacterial activity. The present invention addresses the need for low-cost, environmentally friendly, and biocompatible active advanced wound dressing materials with superior physicochemical properties and enhanced wound healing capabilities.
